Aluminium casement, tilt-and-turn and fixed windows

Windows that open fully and seal tight when shut. The right choice for kitchens, bathrooms, noisy roads and hill homes, plus fixed picture windows for the view.

Bright modern kitchen with large windows

A casement window is hinged like a door. Because the sash presses against rubber gaskets when it closes, it seals tighter than a sliding window, and because it opens fully you get the whole opening for fresh air. Aluminium keeps the frames slim and strong, even on tall windows.

Options we make

TypeHow it opensGood for
Side-hung casementSwings open on side hinges, inward or outward.Bedrooms, living rooms, anywhere you want full ventilation.
Tilt-and-turnTilts in at the top for safe ventilation, or swings fully in for cleaning.Upper floors, children's rooms, apartments.
Top-hungHinged at the top, opens outward at the bottom.Bathrooms and kitchens, and airing during light rain.
Fixed and picture windowsDon't open. Slimmest frames, biggest glass.Views, stairwells, double-height walls, corner windows.

Why choose casement

  • Tighter seal against dust, wind-driven rain and noise, thanks to compression gaskets (usually EPDM rubber).
  • Full ventilation: the whole opening clears, not just half.
  • Combines with fixed glass: a large fixed pane with a smaller opener beside or above it gives you the view and the air.
  • Friction-stay hinges hold the sash open at any angle, even in wind.

Things to plan

  • Inward or outward? Inward-opening sashes need clear space inside; outward-opening ones need a safe way to clean the outside on upper floors.
  • Mesh: with outward-opening windows the mesh goes on the inside, usually a pleated or roller mesh. See the mosquito mesh guide.
  • Glass: double glazing for heat and noise, laminated for safety on low or large panes. See glass options.

Building in the hills? Casement and tilt-and-turn windows are usually the better choice for wind and cold. Read windows for hill homes.

Questions

Is casement better than sliding?

Neither is better everywhere. Casement seals tighter and opens fully; sliding saves space and suits wide openings. Many homes use both. See types of aluminium windows.

What is a tilt-and-turn window?

One handle, two ways to open: turn it one way and the window tilts in at the top for secure ventilation; turn it further and it swings open fully for cleaning or more air.

Can casement windows have mosquito mesh?

Yes. Outward-opening casements take a mesh on the inside, usually pleated, roller or hinged. Inward-opening ones take a fixed or sliding mesh outside.
