What to ask for
- Threshold: a low or flush threshold gives a smooth step-free transition inside to outside, but needs careful drainage design.
- Hardware rated for the panel weight: rollers, hinges and multi-point locks.
- Safety glass: doors should use toughened or laminated glass. See glass options.
- Weather sealing for doors that face rain or wind, and insect screens if the door will be left open in the evenings.

Which is better, sliding or slide-and-fold?
Sliding doors keep a fixed line of glass even when open and are simpler to operate; slide-and-fold doors clear almost the whole opening but stack panels at the side. See our patio door guide.
What is a lift-and-slide door?
A sliding door where the handle lifts the panel onto its rollers to move it, then lowers it onto the seals when closed. It lets very large panels move easily and seal tightly.
Do aluminium doors need toughened glass?
Glass in doors should always be safety glass, either toughened or laminated, so it doesn't break into dangerous shards.
